The American Legion Department of Texas: Veteran Claims Assistance
The American Legion Department of Texas employs accredited Department Service Officers (DSOs) stationed directly at the Houston and Waco Veterans Administration Regional Offices (VARO).
- 100% Free Service: DSOs assist all veterans and their families with navigating the VA system at no cost—membership in The American Legion is not required.
- Comprehensive Claims Support: Our officers assist with initial disability compensation claims, survivor benefits, pensions, and education benefits. They also shepherd claims through the entire adjudication and appeals process.
- Local Representation: Because Compensation & Pension (C&P) claims are processed at the Houston and Waco centers, our DSOs provide direct, on-site advocacy throughout every stage of your claim.

- Burial & Dependency Claims: 4 to 6 weeks
- Original C&P Claims: 3 to 4 months
- Notice of Disagreement (NOD / Appeals): 9 to 12 months
